Woodside Tattoo grew from owner and artist Mateo Rivera's years of working around New York tattoo shops and drawing for people in the neighborhood. Mateo grew up between Woodside and nearby Jackson Heights, where he was surrounded by families, storefronts, music, lettering, religious imagery, memorial art, and the mix of cultures that gives Queens its character. He began drawing names and portraits for friends before tattooing became his trade, and those early requests shaped the kind of work he still enjoys today: personal pieces with a reason behind them.
As the shop developed, Mateo brought in artists who shared the same practical view of tattooing. Good work starts with a conversation. A strong design has to look good on paper, fit the body, and make sense at tattoo scale. The team would rather explain why an idea needs to be simplified, enlarged, repositioned, or approached in stages than promise something that will not translate well to skin. That steady approach has become the foundation of Woodside Tattoo.
